Harley Quinn Makeup Tutorial – Margot Robbie Suicide Squad Transformation

If there’s one Halloween makeup look that never goes out of style, it’s Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad. Between the smudged glam makeup, messy pigtails, and iconic red-and-blue color palette, this look is still one of the most requested Halloween transformations every single year.
For my version, I wanted to recreate Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn with a more glam, cinematic feel while still keeping that chaotic, lived-in energy that makes the character so iconic. Instead of making the makeup perfectly polished, I focused on asymmetry, smudging, texture, and expression to really embody the character.

One of my favorite parts of this transformation was filming the process step-by-step while using audio from the movie during the voiceover. The final result feels less like a traditional makeup tutorial and more like watching Harley Quinn slowly come to life.
Whether you’re recreating this look for Halloween, cosplay, a themed party, or just because you love the character, here’s exactly how I created this glam Harley Quinn transformation.

Harley Quinn Makeup Breakdown

The Eyes

The eyes are really what make this look instantly recognizable. Harley’s makeup is intentionally messy and unbalanced, so don’t stress about making everything perfectly symmetrical.

For the left eye, I blended bright pink and red tones outward in a smoky shape and smudged the lower lash line to make it feel more worn-in and chaotic.

For the right eye, I used deep blue shadow with black smoked around the outer edges to give it that grungy Suicide Squad feel. The key is making the colors look slightly messy without losing the glam factor.

To keep the look dramatic on camera, I added oversized wispy lashes and blended darker tones underneath the eyes to exaggerate the smudged effect.

The Skin & Texture

One thing that really helps Harley Quinn makeup look more realistic is adding texture and imperfection to the skin.

Instead of leaving the complexion flawless, I added subtle gray and black smudging around the forehead, nose, and under-eyes to make the makeup feel more lived-in and cinematic.

I also added a fake cut across the forehead and softened the edges slightly so it blended naturally into the skin.

The Lips

The bold red lip is one of the most iconic parts of Harley Quinn’s makeup look.

Instead of making the lipstick perfectly crisp, I slightly blurred the edges and added a touch of smudging underneath to keep the look feeling messy and in character.

The Hair

For the hair, I used Harley’s signature blonde pigtails with pink and blue ends. This instantly transforms the entire look and makes it recognizable even before the makeup is finished.

The messier the pigtails look, the better. A little teasing and texture actually helps the final result feel more authentic to the movie version.

How to Make Harley Quinn Makeup Look More Realistic

The biggest mistake people make with Harley Quinn makeup is making it too perfect.

What makes Margot Robbie’s version so iconic is that the makeup feels chaotic, slept-in, smudged, and slightly destroyed — but somehow still glamorous at the same time.

A few things that help:

  • Smudge the makeup unevenly
  • Add texture around the eyes
  • Keep the skin slightly imperfect
  • Blend darker tones underneath the eyes
  • Don’t over-clean the edges
  • Let the look feel messy in certain areas

That balance between glam and destruction is what really makes the transformation work.
