After returning home from my Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery in Miami, my surgeon’s orders were to get Lymphatic Drainage Massages over the next few months of recovery. Lymphatic drainage massage dramatically reduces the swelling, fluid build-up, and fibrosis you will experience from the trauma liposuction causes to the body. Little did I know that finding a Massage Therapist who had experience with Liposuction Recovery was NOT an easy task. It took me 3 whole weeks of endless research to find someone in my hometown. After talking with thousands of other Sx Dolls I realized that this was a major trend in the community. This sparked the idea to start surveying Sx Dolls and building a Nationwide database for the community!

Lymphatic drainage massage (also knows as “MLD“) is a specialized procedure that helps the lymph system work more efficiently.

Now that you understand the function, let’s talk about the benefits. Lymphatic drainage massage helps the body maintain proper blood circulation, body fluid balance, and immune functions.

You may be thinking, what does that have to do with liposuctions recovery?

After a procedure like liposuction, tissue can produce excess lymphatic fluid as the body reacts to the traumatic action of the insertion of cannulas and removal of fat. You may experience a degree of tissue disruption, leading to an accumulation of excess fluid, called edema. In some cases, pockets of fibrosis may form, leading to hardened areas of scar tissue.

While lymphatic drainage massage is not required to achieve beautiful results from a liposuction procedure, here is why it’s a good idea:

1. Reduces swelling and helps prevent fluid collection
2. Promotes the flushing of toxins
3. Prevents the formation of scar tissue and fibrosis for a smoother result
4. Improves circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid
5. Helps you heal more quickly and makes your full results visible more speedily
6. Stimulates wound healing
7. May reduce discomfort

During lymphatic drainage massage, a qualified massage therapist gently manipulates the skin and underlying tissues in the areas of lymph production to increase circulation and promote drainage and healing. The massage itself tends to be gentle and light, and should be a relaxing and comfortable procedure for the patient.

Additionally, the reduction in discomfort and swelling immediately afterward makes a lymphatic massage an even more pleasurable experience. Be sure to put your compression garment on immediately after!

A general recommendation is to have three to five massage treatments in the first week, and 1 treatment a week for 3 months. Your cosmetic surgeon will advise you as to whether lymphatic massage will benefit you following your liposuction or other surgical procedure.
